Just as the research evidence mounts which identifies the essential nature of the arts in nurturing creativity and the supporting psychological health of children, many schools have reduced or even eliminated arts programs in a misguided effort to match the testing scores of school systems in other countries where the arts are firmly embedded in their curriculum. Creative self expression and aesthetics are critical to the healthy formation of well rounded individuals. The classical golden triangle of learning and human development – TRUTH, BEAUTY AND GOODNESS – identifies the essential place of an appreciation of BEAUTY to construct balance and harmony in the human personality. The high anxiety levels of American students reflected in the proliferation of prescribed ‘mental health’ drugs to ever increasing numbers of youth and children is a manifestation of the imbalances caused by the exclusive emphasis on cognitive development only. This section is dedicated to making the inclusion of visual and performing arts more accessible to all teachers in an effort to restore a healthy and aesthetically satisfying balance to the learning experience of our children.
